Tensile Fabric Marvel: The Parametric Panel Cover

Andres Silva

This sunshade employs lightweight fabrics, composite materials, and tensioned wires, resulting in a modular, featherweight structure that neatly packs into a single 40ft container when disassembled.

How It All Began

The genesis of this structure involved the parametric creation of lines, punctuated by precise manipulation of points, lines, and ensuing surfaces, culminating in the captivating form you see below. Next, an adaptive family was crafted and positioned atop the shape, orchestrating a staggered array of panels. Materials were then applied, cultivating a scene adorned with a rich tapestry of vegetation, assorted material patterns, infusing vitality and charm. Finally, animated, path-based figures were introduced, featuring people in motion, whether strolling or cycling.

Cutting-Edge Materials

Every element comprising this structure is fashioned from carbon fiber composites, chosen for their exceptional combination of lightness and durability. This material selection ensures superior resilience against abrasion and cracking, a testament to the efficacy of this composite. The fabric itself is a high-tensile-strength poly weave, seamlessly blending the flexibility of poly-chains with the shading properties and extended lifespan characteristic of this woven marvel.

Exploring Alternatives

Several alternative designs were meticulously modeled and considered. However, the design featured above emerged as the most efficient and innovative. It excels at both shielding against the sun's rays and facilitating natural airflow. Through strategically positioned vents and cutouts, it creates a comfortable environment where cool air enters and warm air finds its way out.
