Optimizing Perspectives: Generative Design for Site Placement

Andres Silva

Introduction:

Building upon the foundations laid in Part II, this phase of the study focuses on strategically positioning our "building" along the site boundary. To streamline the process, I simplified the #generativedesign code, utilizing a similar footprint building to represent the tower. The objective of this code is to navigate the building's placement, seeking the most favorable views and minimizing obstructions. It dynamically explores the perimeter to pinpoint the optimal site based on available vistas. The code that fuels this study is presented below.

Navigating Obstacles:

By projecting lines in all directions, any potential obstructions are identified and assigned penalties based on distance and height. In this instance, the study indicates that positioning the structure in close proximity to the adjacent park, while maintaining distance from the L-shaped building, yields the most advantageous outcome. The red rectangle outlines the property boundary, the blue showcases our suggested solutions, and the grey building represents neighboring geometry.

A Glimpse into the Results:

Below, you'll find the suggested outcomes courtesy of the #generativedesign solver, offering swift prototyping and a multitude of potential solutions to explore. Column 3 features a filter in V, where the grey outline selectively hones in on the chosen space, resulting in an elevated ratio of Built-Up Area.

Comparative Insights:

A side-by-side comparison of the Built-Up Area Massing Studies reveals the striking alignment of footprints and features with the original optimized design. This reaffirms the merit of forging ahead with the original concept.

In Closing:

This phase of the study marks a significant stride towards an optimal site placement, balancing views and minimizing obstructions. The journey continues, propelled by the promise of further refinements and innovative breakthroughs.
