Exploring Boundless Possibilities: Generative Design and Building Optimization

Introduction:

The core objective of this design endeavor is to push the boundaries of my pattern-making prowess within Dynamo, employing a range of generative design optimization strategies. This includes dynamic site rotation to enhance views and sculpt the building's form. Additionally, a meticulous lighting analysis informs strategic thinning of glass panels, curbing solar insolation.



The Essence of Generative Design:

Generative design represents an iterative creative process, driven by a programmatic code. It generates a spectrum of outputs that align with predefined constraints set by the designer. The designer refines the viable range by selecting specific outputs or tweaking input parameters, ranges, and distributions with each iteration. I've had the privilege of accessing a Beta version that seamlessly integrates generative design within Revit. The code that underpins the creation of this building is displayed below.


The Intersection of Form and Function:

A critical facet of this endeavor is the intersection of the building's outer walls and the planes representing each floor level. This pivotal connection was instrumental in crafting floors that harmonize seamlessly with the building's contours.




Harnessing the Power of Parameters:

#Generativedesign empowers us to manipulate parameters and values, enabling the precise realization of desired optimizations. In this instance, the algorithm takes shape from multiple points, presenting a diverse array of options once constraints are applied. While some solutions align with the study's criteria and required building height, others veer off course.


A Comprehensive Study:

The conducted study encompassed nine input variables, culminating in a calculation of the built-up area and cladding surface area. In this particular case, I tasked the algorithm with reducing cladding while maximizing usable floor space. The grey sliders in the lower graph serve as filters, streamlining design variants based on selected criteria.




The Art of Coding:

Ultimately, the code plays a pivotal role in generating the floors and establishing a framework for architectural, structural, and other critical views.
