Revitalizing Beijing's National Hotel: A Sustainable Vision with a New Canopy Roof



Located adjacent to the Beijing International Airport in the Fifth Ring of the City, the Beijing National Hotel is an architectural marvel that seamlessly integrates traditional Chinese design with cutting-edge sustainability. As the largest luxury hotel in Beijing, boasting 1,500 rooms, it stands as a testament to innovative architecture and environmental responsibility. Now, this iconic structure is undergoing a transformation with the installation of a new canopy roof, designed to enhance both its aesthetic appeal and sustainable features.


Sustainable Architectural Design: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation


The Beijing National Hotel’s distinctive design is characterized by three volumetric rings fused together, encased within a loose, permeable outer shell. This unique structure not only creates a visually striking appearance but also serves several practical purposes. The rooms are arranged in stacked bars, bent along double-loaded corridors, providing guests with views of both interior courtyards and the city skyline. The stepped-back design results in balconies and interstitial spaces, all protected by the outer shell.


One of the key innovations of this design is the environmental buffer zone between the rooms and the outer shell. This area, containing a synthetic forest, shields guests from Beijing’s harsh sun and pollution while filtering air and obscuring immediate views of the airport and surrounding hardscape. The outer shell also features black linear tattoos that function as a solar thermal system, producing hot water for the hotel—a sustainable feature that merges functionality with aesthetics.

Given Beijing's distinct wet and dry seasons, this system channels rainwater through concealed gutters and pipes into an underground filtration and storage unit. The harvested water is then treated and repurposed for various hotel needs, such as irrigation, laundry, and even as potable water after purification. This feature significantly reduces the hotel’s dependence on the municipal water supply, furthering its commitment to environmental responsibility.
